How To Record Your Violin Performance

Follow Guidelines Below & Watch Winners’ Videos For Reference. 

Recording Guidelines:

1. Prepare your camera for recording.

You can record in following format:
– Violin solo only
– Violin with live accompanist
– Violin with backing track as accompaniment

The recording must show: (*IMPORTANT)
– The contestant’s upper half body (from waist and above)
– Full view of the bow and violin (*IMPORTANT)
– Body and violin to face the camera (not back view)
– Live Accompanist at the side or behind the contestant (if you’re playing with live accompanist)

2. You can record in portrait (vertical) or landscape (horizontal) format.

3. Start by introducing yourself and your piece. (*IMPORTANT) (*IMPORTANT) (*IMPORTANT)

Follow this format:
– Name
– Piece Title
– … for The Happy Music Festival 2022. (*IMPORTANT)

Follow the full script below: (*IMPORTANT)
Hi, my name is (your name).
Today, I’ll be performing (full title of your piece), for “The Happy Music Festival 2022”.

Other variations are also allowed: 
“The Happy Pianist Festival”
“The Happy Pianist Festival 2022”
“The Happy Pianist Music Festival 2022”
“The Happy Violinist Music Festival 2022”

But a video with no introduction will be disqualified. (*IMPORTANT)

4. Proceed to perform your piece.

Timing starts when first note is played, and stops once last note is released. 

5. Ensure that the duration of the performance (from first note to last note) is within the stipulated duration for your category. Do Not Exceed Time Limit (*IMPORTANT)

6. Complete the performance, and stop the recording.

7. The entire video has to be recorded from the start to the end with no interruption in between.

Do:
1. Any smartphone camera is good enough for recording of the performance.
2. You can perform from memory or with the score.
3. You can do multiple takes of the recording, and send in your best one.
4. Record on a acoustic violin. Not electric violin
5. Do record in a quiet environment to minimize any background noise.
6. The camera should be stationary. You can use a camera stand or have someone hold the camera steadily.
7. You can submit any time before the submission deadline.

Don’t:
1. Don’t edit any parts of the video. Only raw video file will be accepted.
2. Don’t use any special mobile apps for recording effects. Plain simple recording will do.
3. Don’t record separately. The self-introduction and performance must be recorded together.

How To Submit Your Performance

Submission Guidelines:

1. Upload your video to any YouTube Account. You can create a free account using your Gmail.

2. Enter the title of the video in the following format: ‘Title of Piece’ by ‘Contestant Name’

“Kuhlau Sonatina in C Major, Op. 20, No.1 by Mark Ng”

3. Set the video privacy to Unlisted or Public.

4. Once video is uploaded, copy the Youtube Link and submit for evaluation.

Violin - Two Violins (No Age Limit)

Age

No age limit for either violinist. 

Semi Final (Recorded): 

Duration: Maximum 6 minutes
Repertoire: Any 1 piece that is classical or non-classical. Free choice. Two violins, with or without piano accompanist. 
Submission Deadline: 29th July 2022, Friday

Final (Live Performance): 

Duration: Maximum 6 minutes
Repertoire: Any 1 piece that is classical or non-classical. Free choice. Finalists can perform the same piece played in the semi-finals. Two violins, with or without piano accompanist. 
Live Performance Date: 9th September 2022, Friday

 

Violin - Classical Junior (9 Years Old And Below)

Age

9 years old and below, as of 1st June 2022

Duration: Maximum 5 minutes
Repertoire: Any 1 piece that is non-classical, or any classical piece from the 4 periods – Baroque , Classical, Romantic, 20th Century. For sonatinas, sonatas or suites, play ONLY 1 movement. All pieces from classical violin exam syllabus (ABRSM/Trinity/LCM) will be considered under classical categories.
Submission Deadline: 29th July 2022, Friday

For recorded submission, violinist can perform in 3 ways:

1. Violin solo only
2. Violin with live piano accompanist
3. Violin with backing track as accompaniment

Marks will be given only for the violinist’s performance, not the accompaniment.

Final (Live Performance): 

Duration: Maximum 5 minutes

On The Happy Music Festival

Who can register and compete in The Happy Music Festival 2022?

The Happy Music Festival 2022 is a music competition open to all pianists and violinists, locals or foreigners, in Singapore and overseas. Registration fee is the same for all nationalities.

Contestants based in Singapore will receive their festival gift, physical copies of certificates, and any trophy won delivered to them at no cost.

Contestants based outside of Singapore will have to pay additional fee for shipping of festival gift, physical copies of certificates and any trophy won.

How many rounds are there in this music competition?

There will be two rounds in this music competition – Semi-Final and Final.

All participants will compete in the first round, the Semi-Final via video submission.

Top performers of each category will enter the Final round, and will perform live-in-person in Singapore

How much time do I have to prepare my performance?

Once you’ve registered, you can start recording and submit your video performance for the Semi-Final round.

Video submission deadline for Semi-Final is on 29th July 2022, 2359 hours.

Final Round Live Performance will take place on 9th September 2022, Friday.

I'm 12 years old before 1st June 2022. Can I still compete in the Classical Junior Category for Piano?

Yes. The age eligibility for Classical Junior Category (Piano) is for contestants aged 12 years old and below, as of 1st June 2022

If you are 13 years old as of 1st June 2022, you can compete in Classical Intermediate (17 years old and below), or Classical Senior (No Age Limit), and Pop Piano (No Age Limit), and Piano Four Hands (No Age Limit)

I'm 12 years old before 1st June 2022. I want to compete in higher age group categories. Can I do that?

Yes. You are welcomed to compete in categories of higher age group. There is no minimum age limit.

Can I register for both Classical and Pop categories?

Yes. You can register for both Classical and Pop categories. Registration fees of two categories will apply.

A contestant is only allowed to register for a classical category – either Classical Junior, Classical Intermediate, or Classical Senior.

If you compete in two categories, you’ll be presented with two sets of certificates, gifts, and also trophies if you win.

Can I register for both Solo and Four Hands/Two Violin categories?

Yes. You can.

For example, you can register for Piano Classical Junior, and Piano Four Hands. You can also register for Violin Classical Intermediate and Two Violins category.

I’m a teacher and I plan to send my students to compete. How many students can I send?

There is no limit on the numbers of students. You are encouraged to send as many students as you deem fit. Your students will benefit greatly from this competition as it will motivate them and build up their stage performance experience. 

I'm a teacher and if I register at least 3 students to compete in this festival, what will I receive?

If you register at least 3 students, you’ll receive a Teacher Certificate of Recognition. We appreciate you for your hard work and effort in preparing your students for this festival.

I learn in a music school. Can I represent my music school to participate in this competition?

Yes, you can. You can register and state your music school as your representative in this competition.

The name of your music school will be printed in your certificate.

If you come in top 3, the name of your music school will be featured on the result page too.

How can I make the payment for registration fees?

Registration fees payment will be made online, via credit card or debit card payment. You’ll receive an email confirmation once you complete the registration

Do I need to pay another registration fee if I enter the Final round?

No. All participants only need to register once, and you don’t need to register and pay another fee again if you enter the Final round.

On Semi-Finals: Recorded Submission

Can I just use my phone to record my performance?

Yes. You can use a phone or camera to record, as long as the recording is raw, clear, and uninterrupted. The judging will be on the performance of the contestant, not the quality of the recording. Performance recording guidelines will be sent to every contestant upon registration.

Can I submit a video that I have recorded for other competitions and submit for The Happy Music Festival 2022?

No, you cannot. Video submission for Semi-Final of The Happy Music Festival 2022 has to adhere to recording guidelines. Videos which do not adhere to guidelines will be rejected.

Can I perform the piece with the music score, or do I have to play from memory?

You can perform with the music score and will not be penalised. The judging will be based on performance, not memory. You can also choose to play from memory if that helps you perform better.

Can I record my performance at home or in a music studio?

Yes. Both are okay. 

What is the dress code for the performance?

No official dress code. You’re encouraged to dress well just like you’re performing for a live stage performance. You’re also encouraged to dress according to the piece you’re performing. Bonus marks may be awarded based on dress code and creativity. 

When will Semi-Final results be announced?

Semi-finals results will be announced on 12th August 2022. More details will be announced nearer the date. Judges decision are final and no appeal is allowed.

On Final: Live Performance

Where will the Final Round be held?

Date: 9th September 2022, Friday

Venue: Bechstein Music World @ Shenton Way

Piano finalists will be playing on a Full Concert Grand Piano C.Becshtein D282.

All finalists will be given more details to their final round live performance after semi-final results are announced. 

Is the Final Round open to the public?

Yes. The public can purchase tickets to attend the Final Round live performance. Ticket details to be announced on a later date.

When will Final results be announced?

Final round results will be announced on actual day. Prizes and trophies will also be presented on the same day.

The judges reserves the right not to award certain prizes if no contestants meet the competition standards.

Judges decision are final and no appeal is allowed.

On Piano and Violin Categories

Can I perform my ABRSM/Trinity/LCM or any exam pieces?

All pieces from classical piano or violin exam syllabus (ABRSM/Trinity/LCM) will be considered under classical categories.

Do I need to submit the music sheet?

Nope, participants don’t need to submit the music sheet to us. 

Can I perform the same piece for the semi-final and the final round?

Yes. You can perform the same piece for the semi-final and the final round. You can also choose to perform a different piece for the final round, as long as your chosen piece fits the repertoire guideline.

Who can participate in Four Hands/Two Violins categories?

There are no restrictions or age limit for participants of the Piano Four Hands and Two Violin categories.

Both participants can be siblings, parent and child, teacher and student, teacher and teacher… as long as it is 2 persons!

On Certificates and Prizes

What will I receive as a contestant?

All contestants will receive a Festival Gift and a Physical Hardcopy Certificate. Written feedback of performance will not be provided.

 

What will I receive as a winner?

If you come in top 3 of a category, you will be awarded with trophies and cash prizes.

I'm a teacher and if my student come in Top 3 in a category, what will I receive?

You’ll receive a Physical Hardcopy “Excellent Teaching Certificate” for nurturing an award-winning musician! Your name will also be announced and published together with your student on our result page to recognise you for your dedication and hard work! 

Will the name of the contestant's teacher, parent or music school be featured on the certificate or the result page?

Every contestant’s certificate will feature the name of his/her representative – which can be the teacher, parent, music school, or ownself.

If the contestant come in top 3 of a category, the representative name will also be featured on the result page.
