About

Hi, I’m Ms Ru Yi, and I’m a full-time piano teacher based in Singapore. I’ve been teaching piano since 2007, in Singapore, Australia, and Malaysia. My students age from kids as young as 3.5 years old to adults at 60 years old, teaching beginners and all the way to Diploma level.

I started learning piano at the age of 6, and my parents are very supportive throughout my entire music learning journey. I believe that everyone can learn to play the piano regardless of their age or ability.

Coupled with excellent music education and the discipline to practice, anyone can go far in their music education.

I’m also fortunate to learn from many great teachers in music. I studied under Mr Jamie Smith, the ABRSM coordinator of Malaysia, for my Bachelor Degree in Music Education, where I graduated with First Class Honours. I was in the Dean’s list throughout the 4-year program.

I also completed by Masters Of Arts in Music Pedagogy and Performance and was awarded a scholarship to The University of Adelaide under the guidance of renowned Australian music composer and lecturer, Stephen Whittington.

Over in University of Adelaide, I studied the psychology of music, music theory, history of piano, piano pedagogy and many more. All these learning comes in handy when I’m giving my music lessons.

Making my lessons fun and engaging is what I aim to do for every of my student. My goal for every student is to lay a strong foundation of playing skills, building up his/her musicianship, while learning in a fun and discipline environment.

Till date, I have taught young children below 8 years old to finish their Grade 5 Theory, and they attained Merit and Distinctions. Most of my students who took Grade 6 Theory and above and attained either Merit of Distinction.

Most of my kids students also complete their first ever Grade 1 piano at age of 5 or 6 years old, most of the time distinction. Some of my talented students have gone on to complete Grade 8 (with at least a Merit) at 12 years old.

In 2020, I registered some of my students for The Happy Pianist Festival 2020, an online piano competition organized by The Happy Pianist. And I’ve very happy to have two of my students emerging as winners in the festival!

My student, Raine Loh, came in first in the Little Star Category, winning her The Shining Star award. Below is a photo of the award presentation together with the organizer.

Here’s the performance by Rainie which won her the award.

Another of my student, Anav See, progressed to the finals of the Classical Junior Category, and won the Best Presentation award.

Below is Anav’s performance for the finals of the Classical Junior category.

Enjoy their performances!
